Opened in October 2005, Don Bosco College, Ibadan, belongs to the Salesian vice-province of West Africa (AFW) which has its headquarters in Ashaiman, Accra, Ghana. It is part of the world-wide organization called the Salesian Society. Founded by Don Bosco, an Italian saint-educator of the nineteenth century, the Salesian Society is spread over 128 nations.

The aim of this stage of formation is "the human maturing of the young confrere, his intellectual preparation and the deepening of his consecrated life, as he is gradually introduced into educational and pastoral work" (Salesian Constitutions 102). "The deepening of the life of faith and of the spirit of Don Bosco, together with an adequate philosophical, pedagogical and catechetical preparation that interacts with the prevailing culture disposes the young confrere to a progressive integration of faith, culture and life" (Salesian Constitutions 114).
